  Religion is a group or a club. its rituals… a relationship is a walk, hand in hand with Jesus. Putting all their focus on Jesus and not the traditions of man. I was once a Catholic before I was saved. Now I know the differnce bewteen the 2

  Because for certain individuals, they genuinely do feel like they have a relationship with this person. It’s hard for me to imagine such a thing, but I can respect the fact that some people can feel it [although I will point out this doesn't make me believe Jesus is real].

  As they feel so intimate with Jesus, they might feel that labelling what they feel as being a religion a callous and insufficient term to describe how they are.

  Because religion (even though I’m in one) promotes something that a group of people said is true and what society has decided to be true. Its not a relationship anymore, but a set of guidelines or rules.

  Because it’s the truth. Same thing with Atheists. Why do Atheist say what they believe is not a religion but a relationship with Science/Rational & Logical Thinking?

  You know, I’ve seen atheists ask this before, but I’ve never actually seen a Christian say that. Could you please provide a link?

  I myself, as a Christian, know Christianity is a religion, and those who say it isn’t, clearly don’t understand the meaning of the word ‘religion’.

  Im Catholic and I believe in a religion. I also have a relationship with God. And I have faith. I think it’s multifaceted in how you can explain what you believe since religion and spirituality isnt that simple, explanatory answers cant be simple either.

  Religion is rules. More worried about what’s right and wrong than is the person growing with God. For example, some people get stuck on resting on the seventh day (rules). Well, to what extent? Some believe no one should work on the seventh day and others believe just they shouldn’t. I have known people to say they can’t be scheduled to work because God says rest, but they will go the a restaurant to eat so they don’t have to work at cooking. Well, that means that they are causing someone else to work. Hypocrites!!!

  Romans 3:23 says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,". No one is perfect and we all have sinful ways that God helps us to overcome.

  The important thing is to always grow in your walk with the Lord. As we grow in our "relationship" with Jesus, our sinful ways are revealed to us so we can change them. The amazing thing is that not only does He show us what we need to change but He also gives us the strength to change it!

  I want to encourage you to develop a relationship with Jesus and let Him guide and help you.

  The bottom line is we all are sinners and Jesus died on the cross so that you and I and every single person that has lived or ever will live can have eternal life in heaven.

  I’ve always heard that religion is mans’ way of reaching God and Christianity is Gods’ way of reaching man.Religion involves rituals and manmade traditions and even doing good works to earn heaven.All of this goes contrary to what what the Bible says.Salvation is a free gift and cannot be earned.Look at what Adam and Eve lost through their sinning in the garden.It was a relationship.A relationship with God,Himself!When Jesus died on the cross and was ressurrected,He restored all that Adam lost in the garden.The most important was a relationship with God.By faith we can receive a sons relationship with a Father.A perfect Father in fact.

  Because that relationship transcends any and all religions. The bible does not tell us anywhere that once we have accepted Jesus Christ we are now good catholics, mormons, jws, none of those but it does tell us that we are heirs of the kingdom, joint-heirs with Christ, the bride of Christ and sons of the living God.

  Most religions detract from Jesus because they want their congregants to pay homage and tithes to them…..and most aren’t worthy because people do not get saved through their teachings.

  For example, I was raised catholic, catholic grade school, catholic high school, altar boy, first three blessed sacraments but I didn’t become a christian until I left that religion and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I did this as a knowing adult and it was then that I joined the only church of Jesus Christ. His church…not some man-made philosphy that fails in it’s attempts to reach God.

  Born again christians can come out of any religion and indeed have but these do not have their own religion, they have Christ and profess Him every chance they get.

  If you have ever fallen asleep on Sunday morning sitting in some pew, I think you know what I am talking about.

  Dictionary.com’s third definition to the word “religion” states that it’s “the body of person’s adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices.” Since there are so many denominations of Christianity that practice different “rituals,” a lot of Christians prefer to say that they’re a follower of Jesus and/or that they believe in having a relationship with Him because not all Christians practice the same things. Furthermore, there have been many times that I’ve seen Christians on this site, and out in “the real world,” judging/condemning others for their lifestyles, when they have NO PLACE doing so. I even heard one girl in her twenties say that an older “religious” woman told her she was going to Hell. Behavior like that from so-called “religious” people infuriates me because they have NO RIGHT telling someone their eternal destination. They have no idea what someone’s future is going to hold, so they have NO BUSINESS telling that person their fate. Only God knows what it will be. So that’s why I, myself, prefer to say that I’m a follower of Jesus as opposed to “religious” or even a “Christian.” I think people are turned off by those words because they automatically think they’ll be judged or told that they need to live by a certain set of rules. And that’s not what a relationship with Jesus is about. Yes, He does advise that we don’t do certain things, i.e. get drunk. However, there’s sooooooooo much more to it that that. Jesus calls His followers to love everyone just as He did…and that means EVERYONE: Murderers, slanderers, thieves, prostitutes, drug addicts, the poor, the homeless and especially non-believers. So in answer to your question, I think many Christians say that they believe in having a relationship with Jesus so they don’t scare people off.
